Data Movement – Integration Challenges

ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) or Data Movement is one of the biggest challenges every organization faces in the modern data driven world. On the surface, it sounds like a simple effort of moving data from one place to another, but the reality is different. According to the Industry Benchmark, 70-percent of the data warehouse and Business Intelligence (BI) project lifecycle is involved with Data Acquisition and Data Movement.

ETL can be defined as the set of technologies that:

1) Extracts in batches or micro-batches, high volumes of data from one or more disparate data sources;

2) Run complex transformations on the data which could include cleansing, reformatting, standardization, aggregation and application of any number of business rules; and

3) Load the resulting data set into specified target systems or file formats.

While ETL technology is still heavily used for data warehousing and business intelligence initiatives, smart global organizations are embracing this technology to support increasingly complex data integration challenges. These challenges may often include real-time or near real-time data integration requirements or more targeted and less invasive source data access methods, such as change data capture (CDC).

Some of the other popular data integration challenges include:

Data Migrations. Most organizations are moving their operational legacy data (ERP, Supply Chain, Inventory, etc) built using custom code and traditional data replication software, into newer platforms and products using modern ETL Technology. This helps organizations with proper source data analysis, metadata capture, data governance and data compliance, and thus reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and increasing higher business visibility. Another area which is gaining popularity, is the migration of data due to Merger and Acquisition (M&A).

Compliance. Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), Basel II, Privacy Laws, HIPPA, Anti-Money Laundering and other regulatory audits are requiring organizations across multiple industries - most notably financial services and insurance - to improve their ability to track and audit the movement and consumption of sensitive data. The metadata accumulated during the entire ETL process along with the data consumption metadata, provides the valuable insights necessary to meet these auditing demands.

Master Data Management. Every smart competitive organization feels the need to have a “single version of truth” for critical enterprise business entities (customer, product, employee, etc). Today’s business is quietly moving from “great-to-have” to “it is necessary”, and ETL technology is often the foundation of the MDM process.

Acxius’s ETL and Data Integration Services can help you in this effort by providing you with high performance, scalable and integrated solutions to achieve your EDM goals - thus taking your business to the next level in the process.
